Set in the notorious Pollsmoor Maximum Security prison, that once housed Nobel laurite Nelson Mandela, “Prison Codes” is renowned writer, producer, Boebie Hamza’s in-depth exploration into the world of the ferocious Numbers gangs.
Through tears and laughter an avuncular warder tells the tragic story of David Adonis a hard-working a family-orientated newlywed man with a bright future whose life changes drastically when a selfless act of bravery lands him in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Forced to adapt to his harsh environment Davie joins a prison gang in order to survive. In the process an abrupt metamorphosis happens and Davie begins to question his very nature as he loses not only himself, but those he tried to protect.
Wanting nothing more than to get out and return to his young wife and new born baby, Davie finds a mentor and friendship in his cellmate, Psycho, a cunning and manipulative ne'er-do-well lifer whose knowledge of prison politics saves Davie from gang violence.
The movie explores the complexities of the subversive numbers gang system, decoding their language and culture and presents the vulnerabilities of gangsters in these self-perpetuating universities of crime, while exposing the face of humanity in this inhumane environment.
