Ah the stress of this industry!

What does a filmmaker do when there is no work? My poor son is having the hardest time, plenty of crew calls for non-pay projects but not a one for pay. At first I thought it was just Texas but now I've been told it's just about everywhere. How can these production companies, that don't pay, expect people with equipment to bring their equipment (in most cases at least $5-10K minimum, in a Steadicam operator's case $30-40K) onto their projects and not get paid? Why make a film if you can't even…See More

Resume (Position, Network/Production Company, Year, Location, & Description) - you can cut and paste your resume here
It is said I entered this world with a vivid imagination. While growing up I loved to create the world around me, I still do. I wrote little stories and always dreamed of performing them in our little "block theatre". However, even then I was a better writer than producer and our little productions usually only consisted of hanging the bed sheets, drawing the poster and making tickets. Casting and all that other "production" stuff usually shut down production early.

I never gave up on my writing. I would write my own stories and would re-write television shows and movies that I thought could have been better. I wrote everywhere maybe in part because I loved brightly colored notebooks, fancy paper and colored ink pens. I'm still like a kid in a candy store every time I walk into an office supply store.

I started out in the industry back in the 70's working as an extra on various television and film projects such as: CHiPs, Eight is Enough, California Fever, Lunch Wagon and Roller Boogie. The first couple of projects came about because I lied about my age and ditched school. I cannot blame the industry for making me want to ditch school - but going from the magical world of make-believe to the gray reality of school was never an easy transition.

In the 80's I needed a guaranteed weekly paycheck and gave up my dreams of acting and writing and started working in the "real world". I was lucky that I did have a job I at least enjoyed. For some nutty reason I love numbers and fit into the world of accounting. Hughes Aircraft was a nice place to work and I had some wonderful bosses that provided me with the flexibility I needed as a single mother.

Now that my son is grown and making his way in the industry I am back to writing. I have completed 2 specs, numerous shorts and am currently working on 3 specs. All original stories created in my imagination.

Now all I need to do is sell a script and I'll be a paid writer!
Active Projects
"Hooper and Wes" - short to feature - "Two small time hoods turn into hit men with less than perfect results."

COMPLETED SCRIPTS:
"Remember Me" - feature - "What would you do if you woke up dead, had a less than perfect spirit guide and had to save someone's life?"
"When Angels Cry - feature - "A young boy is missing, his estranged parents are suspects but could his disappearance be connected to the lead detective or is it even more sinister?"
Favorites (Film, Director, Television, Actors, Musicians, etc.)
My favorite film is Deathtrap. Don't watch much television anymore-too much reality junk.
Dreams & Goals
Don't dream it be it! My goals are:
1. Move back to California - DONE
2. Be the first mother and son Academy Award winners
3. Write a script that makes the audience say "What the f**$" in each act

I'm back!

Things have been busy in the Deitch household!

My son Michael sustained an injury to his back while blocking a shot on a feature, total freak accident but his spotter still feels bad about it. He had his Steadicam rig on and didn't want to damage his rig so he twisted when he fell and hurt his back. He is finally feeling better and can't wait to get back to work - sadly Texas doesn't have many paying projects right now but with the opening of Spiderwood Studios we are hoping that… Continue

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I hope everyone is doing well and is enjoying the holiday season.

As for us Deitch's it is going to be low key this year. Michael wrapped on a 20-day shoot that was really tough so he is wants quiet down time. Our family is scattered and traveling this year isn't an option due to my old dog, Charlie who is no longer able to travel.

I've been ordered to get Hooper and Wes finished since we have interest in it. I'm nearly there but you know how it goes... it's never perfect!… Continue

This time next year...

I'll be returning to my California :-) Can you tell I'm excited?!?!

Things going well for the most part. I'm early done with Hooper & Wes's story, only a few more loose ends to tie up and determining who did what to who, why and how!

My son is struggling trying to find a paying job here in Texas. He was offered a dolly grip position but the pay was below substandard for long hours and six day work week. They wouldn't come up $25 per day so he said no. His friend… Continue

Update on previous blog!

My son, Michael, is in Los Angeles for a week checking things out. The gods have laid out his road and they keep him on it - the night before he left he got a call to work a couple of days at Warner Brothers on a George Lopez pilot. He had to rush from the airport straight to the lot and got right to work. He's not union yet so he wasn't allowed to do true "grip" work but he worked and made some good connections! He plans to move back permanently in January 2009. I'll follow in September… Continue

Hi Victoria
I am also a born and bred Texas girl. I lived in S.A. for most of my life. I'm here in L.A. trying to live out my suenos. Hey I can totally relate to some of your blogs. My daughter has also left the nest and now for the first time in my life I am doing what I've always loved. I am so unbelievably happy to be able to spread my wings in L.A. I've met so many cool ppl. Hey I can also relate to ur sleeping dilemma. I actually developed a bad case of insomnia because of the ppl clamoring to get out of my head lol, but I love it! Which I'm sure u do as well. Hey if ya ever make out to L.A. let me know we'll do coffee!
Peace out...Elsa

Kudos for keeping your passion alive in the face of the "realities" of life.....as women of a certain age, sometimes we've got to fight an uphill battle.....
Here's supporting you in your return to California (although I love Austin!)
Stay in touch....P.S. check out inktip.com for script placement and shopping.....
